City officials closed Monterey’s San Carlos Beach Friday afternoon due to a sewage spill, advising the public to avoid contact with ocean and storm drain water near the beach. According to a press release from the Monterey County Health Department, bacteria, viruses, protozoa or chemicals may contaminate storm drain water, and contact with storm drain water may cause illness.
