Update: 2-year-old Jacob Vargas is back home with family

UPDATE 4/14/16 5:34 PM: The child at the center of an Amber Alert, is now back with family after being released from a Monterey County area hospital where he was examined and interviewed.

Jacob Vargas, 2, was reported missing Thursday morning after the car he was in was stolen in Soledad. This sparked a statewide Amber Alert.

A witness called 911 after he spotted a vehicle matching the description of the stolen car, according to the Soledad Police Department. The vehicle was found parked in a shed off of River Road in Gonzales.

Police said Jacob was inside the car still seated in his car seat. Officers broke into the car when they noticed all doors were locked and got him out.

Multiple agencies helped with the search of the 2-year-old, including the Greenfield Police Department, Monterey County Sheriff’s office and the California Highway Patrol.

The investigation is on-going. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Soledad Police Department.

UPDATE 4/14/16 2:17 PM: CHP Monterey County says its emergency dispatch center received a 911 call from someone saying they believed they knew the location of the car that was the subject of a statewide Amber Alert involving 2-year old Jacob Vargas.

A sheriff’s deputy went to investigate and found the black Honda, abandoned in a barn located in Gonzalez. The child from Soledad was also found and is said to be safe. Paramedics are on the scene checking on the boy’s condition.

UPDATE 4/14/16 2:06 PM: The stepfather of 2-year-old Jacob Vargas tells KION that her son was found abandoned in a shed near River Road in Gonzales.

UPDATE 4/14/16 1:57 PM: Soledad Police confirm that 2-year-old Jacob Vargas has been found and the stolen car has been recovered.

UPDATE 4/14/16 11:30 AM: Police have confirmed with KION that the 2-year-old boy’s first name is Jacob. Initial reports said his name was Jason.

UPDATE 4/14/16 9:15 AM: Officials are looking for 2-year-old Jason Vargas after a carjacking out of Soledad and an Amber Alert has been issued.

Officials said Vargas went missing Thursday morning. One of his parents was warming up the car on the 100 block of Head Street shortly before 7 a.m. and the child was inside. When the parent went back inside the house, the car was stolen with Vargas inside.

Vargas is wearing a beige beanie, blue sweater, white shirt with yellow stripes and blue jeans. Jason has asthma and needs to take medication by 4:00 p.m.

The car officials are looking for is a 2015 Black Honda Accord with tinted windows and damage to the left rear bumper. The license plate is 7LIE244.
