Monterey Peninsula murder suspect 8 years on the run finally nabbed

The man at the center of a nearly eight year long murder investigation on the Monterey Peninsula is in custody, recently tracked down and arrested in Mexico, according to Marina Police.

“This case in particular has been a priority for not only the Marina Police Department but for Monterey police as well,” said Marina Police Chief Ed Rodriguez.

Victor Cabrera was wanted for the 2008 murder of his girlfriend, Roshni Singh. He was arrested on April 11, in Guadalajara by federal agents.

“We will do whatever we can to bring an individual to justice and we won’t let time and we won’t let distance or jurisdiction stand in our way of that,” said FBI Special Agent Bertram Fairries.

You may remember the story. Singh, a single mom from Marina, was found dead in her SUV near Village Motor Works in Monterey. Autopsy results showed Singh died from strangulation and detectives said she was killed in her Marina home.

As the investigation developed, detectives said the suspected killer was her boyfriend, Cabrera, and that Cabrera tried to make the crime scene look like a robbery and kidnapping at Village Motor Works.

“We believe that was him attempting to set up his alibi for the murder of his girlfriend Roshni Singh,” said Rodriguez.

About a year later, investigators released more information to KION about the suspected motive, saying Singh was killed because of her $600,000 in life insurance, for which Cabrera was the beneficiary.

“Throughout the years we have followed lead after lead regarding his whereabouts. So to finally find him and to arrest him is a huge accomplishment for us,” said Rodriguez.

Investigators also said Cabrera didn’t act alone. In 2011, Francisco Agaton Hernandez was convicted of second-degree murder for helping Cabrera carry out and cover up the murder. Hernandez is currently serving 15 years to life.

KION will continue to update this story.
