Bicyclist, 53, dies in hospital after crash in Salinas

The Salinas Police Department is investigating a crash that leaves a 53-year-old bicyclist dead.

According to police, a 38-year-old woman driving a minivan was approaching Maryal Drive at about 30-35 mph from East Bernal Drive when the bicyclist was riding his bike down the hill of Maryal toward Bernal.

Police said a witness saw the bicyclist ride through the stop sign without slowing down. The bicyclist collided with the right/front of the minivan and suffered head trauma, according to the report.

The bicyclist was taken to Natividad Medical Center’s Trauma Unit for surgery, but later died at the hospital.

Police said the driver was properly licensed and did not appear to be under the influence.
