UPDATE: Ninth homicide in Salinas

UPDATE 4/5/2016 5:20 AM: One dead and one injured after Monday night’s shooting in the 800 block of Garner Avenue in Salinas, marking the ninth homicide of the year. The incident happened at 9:40 PM. Officers found 16-year-old Jose Luis Valdez suffering from at least one gunshot wound. He was taken to Natividad Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Bullets also struck two nearby apartment buildings. One of the rounds traveled through a wall and struck a 12-year-old boy in the hand. He was treated at the scene.

The initial investigation found that Valdez had recently left a residence nearby and was walking to meet a friend or two. He was then confronted by at least two people before they fired several shots.

It’s unknown if the suspects fled on foot or in a vehicle. If anyone has information regarding this homicide, they are asked to contact Detective Sivertson at (831) 758-7132 or Detective Gibson at (831) 758-7442. This homicide is believed to be gang related.

Salinas police say one person was shot, but aren’t releasing the age or gender of the victim. It happened around 9:45p.m. on Garner Avenue. Police say the person was sent to the hospital with unknown injuries.
