Attempted sexual assault at UCSC dorm

Police at UC Santa Cruz are investigating an attempted sexual assault that happened on campus on Saturday morning.

According to police, someone got into the Porter Dormitories, entered one the rooms, and tried to assault a student while she slept. When the student awoke, the man ran off.

The suspect is described as a medium built man with wavy blonde or light brown hair.

Police say they are still sorting through the evidence and couldn’t give us many other details, but they do offer some tips to students on staying safe.

“We ask that our community to no let strangers into residence halls or living areas and to ask questions about who these individuals may be,” said U.C. Santa Cruz Police Chief Nader Oweis.

Here are some other tips from UC Santa Cruz Police: Lock all doors and windows, if something or someone makes you uneasy, tell someone, avoid the person or leave the area. Also, encourage friends to travel in pairs and if you feel unsafe use the “Night Safety Escort Program.”

“We are small a community and we encourage everyone to really work together to share in the responsibility of keeping everyone safe,” added Oweis.
