Soledad murder suspect surrenders

A suspect in the 2015 murder of a Soledad man surrendered to police Friday, and was booked without bail into the Monterey County Jail for murder.

Jose Carlos Romero, 27, is suspected of fatally shooting Eric Shackleford at the Buena Vista Town Homes in Soledad on September 24, 2015. Witnesses reported seeing Romero in the area at the same time the incident occurred.

On Wednesday, March 23, police presented the results of its criminal investigation to the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office, which found sufficient evidence to issue a no bail homicide arrest warrant for Romero. Initial attempts to contact Romero were unsuccessful, but officers notified family members of the arrest warrant.

On Friday, March 25, Romero walked into the Soledad Police Department and surrendered to authorities.

Officers continue to conduct a follow-up investigation and ask that anyone with information related to this case contact Detective Mollie Enriquez at (831) 223-5140 or call the Soledad Police Department at (831)223-5120.
