Police investigate vehicle thefts in Seaside

The Seaside Police Department is dealing with a spike in vehicle thefts.

According to police, there have been more than 20 vehicles reported stolen since January 1, 2016.

The top vehicles stolen are motorcycles, mopeds, scooters and Honda Accords.

A report by the California Highway Patrol reveals that the Honda Accord has been the number one stolen vehicle since 2006.

To avoid becoming a victim of vehicle theft and help officers investigate these cases police advise you to:

1. Secure your vehicle. Keep it locked at all times even when you are driving.

2. Never leave your keys in the car when you are parked and close all the windows and sunroof.

3. Park your vehicle in a high visibility area or a well-lit area at night whenever possible.

4. Install an anti-theft system in your vehicle if it does not have one.

5. Have the vehicle identification number (VIN) etched on the glass and other parts of the car. This discourages chop shops.

6. Report all suspicious activity

7. Be a good witness. Write down dates, times, descriptions. If you can do it safely, take a picture with your phone or a video.
