Retired Monterey Police chief passes away

Retired Monterey Police Chief Gary Brown passed away Wednesday night, according to the Monterey Police Department.

On Facebook, the department talked about Chief Brown and his service.

His career started in 1960, when he was hired as a police officer in Garden Grove. He then worked as an an officer for the Carpinteria Police Department.

Later taking on the role of police chief, he served as chief in Chowchilla, South Pasadena, San Clemente and Ashland, Oregon.

He served as the Monterey Police Chief from 1997 to 2001.

The post on Facebook said, “For those of us that knew him, he was kind, caring, empathetic, and cared about all members of society. He loved police work and his family. May he rest in peace….thank you for your years of service.”
