Santa Cruz roller derby gets rolling

A new season of a different kind of sport is rolling back into Santa Cruz this weekend. It’s time for a little roller derby as the Boardwalk Bombshells all star team of Santa Cruz kicks off the derby season this Saturday. The Bombshells are an all-star traveling team who competes internationally representing Santa Cruz. This team is part of the Santa Cruz Derby Girls, an all-female amateur flat-track roller derby league that has been around since 2009. There’s plenty of reasons to come witness the Bombshell’s first game of the season this Saturday.

“We are currently ranked in the mid-40’s, we’re 45 as of today, out of all the teams in the world which is really amazing for little Santa Cruz,” says Jammer, Queen Litigious.

“Like Queen was saying about empowering young girls, to say you can come out and play full-contact sports, they get to come out and see that and we get to be role models which I just love about this sport,” says Team Co-Captain, Shamrock N. Roll.

“I’m super excited and also super nervous, it’s like you’re going on a first date every time you play, you get butterflies in your stomach and I think that feeling should never go away,” says Blocker, Beans.

The Bombshells will take on the Bay Area Derby Oakland Outlaws this Saturday at 6:30PM at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium.
