UPDATE: Flooding in Santa Cruz County prompts evacuations Sunday

UPDATE 3/6/16 8:19AM: The National Weather Service reports a High Surf Advisory will remain in effect until Tuesday morning.

In a Sunday morning update, the NWS said more rain and wind are on the way later in the day. Debris can be seen along the coast Sunday morning from this weekend’s storm.

The storm took down a tree at New Brighton State Beach, very close to some cars around 8:30am. Crews are working to remove the tree.

PREVIOUS STORY: Flooding in Santa Cruz caused rivers to rise above flood stage and forced people out of their homes, according to Santa Cruz County communications manager Jason Hoppin.

Two evacuation centers have been set up in Felton and Capitola for residents impacted by flooding along the San Lorenzo River and Soquel Creek.

At one point the rain fell at a rate of 1.5 inches per hour in Soquel Village. The stormy weather forced road closures in all areas of Santa Cruz county, including the Santa Cruz mountains, Aptos and Santa Cruz.
