Man who fatally stabbed a homeless man in Monterey sentenced

A Monterey man has been sentenced to 56 years-to-life in prison for murder and attempted manslaughter.

According to the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office, Jesse Quiming’s sentence was extended because of a prior robbery conviction in 2005.

On June 19, 2015, Quiming was involved in an argument over alcohol on the back patio of the Monterey City Library where several homeless people were getting ready to campout. Quiming was upset that another man, Scott Long, wouldn’t share his alcohol. Without warning, Quiming walked over to where Long was sitting and stabbed him four times.

Another man, Tyler Misamore, came to Long’s defense and Quiming stabbed him four times.

Scott Long died at the scene. The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office found Quiming hiding near Carmel High School about 24 hours later.
