California could be deciding vote in primary

June 7 th is the date for California’s presidential primary, making it one of the last states to vote.

“If races aren’t decided by June, for the first time California’s large number of delegates might go into play,” said Political Analyst Dr. David Anderson.

If those delegates go into play, that would be very different from years in the past.

“In most years the nominating process is such that by the time you get to June the nominees are pretty well determined,” said Anderson.

So with Donald Trump winning seven of the eleven States, and Hillary Clinton closer than ever to clinching her the Democrat Party nominee, candidates Bernie Sanders, Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz will need some major victories in order for California’s voters to play a deciding role.

“I have my doubts I think we will know by June, but Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton are both admired by California democrats. So if it gets down to June and neither one of those candidates has a clear lead it could be an interesting time,” said Anderson.

No matter who the candidates are come June, for the Monterey County Elections Department business will run as usual.

“What we do every election. First of all make sure we have the elections set up. Presidential years that’s when we have the most turnout,” said Monterey County Registrar of Voters Claudio Valenzuela.

You can register to vote online or in person.

“All voters can vote here in Monterey County, however voting for President depends on the party you’re registered with. So when checking to if you’re registered to vote, also check your party,” said Valenzuela.

All changes to party affiliation need to be done by May 23rd.
