Santa Cruz couples tie the knot on Leap Day

The day most people say “I do” is, to many, the most memorable day of their lives, and for some Santa Cruz couples, tying the knot on a day that only comes around every four years makes everything that much more memorable. Leap Day just comes and goes like any other day. But for some, February 29th will live with them forever.

“We figured it should be a year of luck, especially today because it’s a leap year, so that’s why we decided to go with today. The 29th,” said newlywed Paya Luna.

Paya and Javier Luna were one of six couples who took the leap and were married Monday at the Santa Cruz County Courthouse. The courthouse opened up to perform marriage ceremonies all day for the second time ever..
2012 marked the first time the court offered all-day leap day wedding. Moday’s six weddings are a bit above average for the courthouse. The clerk says it’s becoming more popular all over the country.

“There’s movies and legends about leap year day about weddings and proposals and couples are interested in getting married this day and we say sure let’s open it up and have lots of weddings,” said Santa Cruz County Clerk Gail Pellerin.

“It feels great! It feels great to finally be married,” said Luna.

Couples received cake and cider and even a little certificate that reads “We took the leap on leap year day.” It’s a day that little Bella and her parents will remember forever.

Just to clarify, as far as I know, most couple’s are not getting married on this February 29th just so they only need to celebrate anniversaries every four years. Most couples say they’ll celebrate the whole month of February every year until that majestic 29th rolls around again.
