Watsonville DMV evacuated due to suspicious bottle

UPDATE 2/2/2016 2:50 PM: Watsonville Police say the police activity has ended at the DMV. The road is back open, but the DMV will remain closed. Officials report the bottle with something in it was harmless.

Coming up tonight on KION, Steven Fundaro will have more on how the Monterey County Sheriff’s Bomb Squad is covering more than just their area during Super Bowl week. That’s because the Santa Cruz County Bomb Squad is up in the Bay Area.

“They strategically placed their equipment so if they need to go to Santa Cruz, Monterey, Santa Clara or to San Benito, there’s equipment close by they can pick up on the way,” Monterey County CommanderJohn Thornburgsaid.

ORIGINAL STORY: The Monterey County Sheriff’s Bomb Squad has confirmed with KION that the Watsonville DMV has been evacuated following the discovery of a suspicious bottle.

CHP and the Santa Cruz Fire Department are also on scene.

The Bomb Squad is coordinating now to render the bottle safe. It’s a small bottle with liquid in it, found behind the DMV.

H. A. Hyde Elementary School, near the DMV, is not on lockdown right now.

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Bomb Squad is responding because the Santa Cruz County Bomb Squad is up at Super Bowl week.
