Otter Bowl at the Monterey Bay Aquarium
In anticipation of Super Bowl Sunday, the Monterey Bay Aquarium hosted their first-ever Otter Bowl.
Using ice molds shaped into helmets, aquarium staff created a football field for the otters to play in. On one side, blue ice helmets for the Broncos, on the other, silver for the Panthers.
But these weren’t just any ice helmets — each one had shrimp inside. As for the footballs, the laces were made with strips of clam. It was truly a “breakfast of champions.”
Once the staff let the otters in, it was game time; a tasty treat that also keeps the otters healthy. Staff call these kinds of events an “enrichment,” which refers to anything that’s mentally or physically stimulating for the animals.
“We do a lot here at the aquarium to change things up for our animals and make their days different,” Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Cat Chiappa said.
The otters certainly seemed to be enjoying themselves, despite a few fumbles.
“It’s hard to pick a winner today,” Chiappa said. “I’m not too sure who is going to win on Sunday, but I think our otters won today for sure.”
