UPDATE: Man admits to killing his mom and concealing her in trunk found in Prunedale, police say

UPDATE 8/26/15 9:34 p.m.: Tuesday evening a 24-year-old man admitted to killing his mom and concealing her body in the trunk of her car later found at a Prunedale shopping center, according to Salinas Police.

Investigators said Erick DeAnda, 24, was in the driver seat of the car at Prune-Tree Shopping center and told police he killed his mother Lilia DeAnda, 53 after an argument at a home on Douglass Ave. in Salinas. During the argument, police said Erick strangled his mother then may have gone to a gas station to fill a gas can with the intention of lighting the car on fire.

Shortly after the argument, police said other family members showed up at the home and became concerned about Lilia’s whereabouts. When family members called Lilia’s cell phone, police said Erick picked up and admitted to killing his mom and putting her in the trunk. Family members then called police and Erick was located at the shopping center in Prunedale.

Erick was booked into the Monterey County Jail and police are asking anyone with information to call the investigations unit at 831-758-7226.

Monterey County sheriff’s deputies and Salinas Police are at the Prunetree Shopping Center. They’ve taped off a portion of the parking lot. They are also investigating a black sedan.
