Man killed in Saturday morning apartment fire in Salinas

One person is dead after an apartment fire on Harvest Street in Salinas.

Salinas Fire officals suspect the fire may have started just before 10 a.m. Saturday morning in the living room of the apartment. A total of three people were inside the apartment unit at the time, all brothers.

It is believed that the deceased victim, a 20-year-old male, went into the kitchen, but became trapped. The victim had a mental impairment and was unable to speak. The two other brothers, both teenagers, were in their bedrooms at the time and attempted to help the brother but were unable to. Those brothers were able to escape by jumping out of the second story window. One suffered a fractured leg.

The apartment complex was evacuated as a precaution. Multiple agencies responded to the second alarm fire, including Monterey Fire.
