Grandparents warned after phone scam in Santa Cruz County

The Santa Cruz County’s District Attorney is warning seniors about a phone scam.

Officials say they’ve received reports of imposters calling seniors, pretending to be grandchildren in distress and in need of money.

The callers say they are in jail needing bail, or are traveling and have lost their luggage and money.

Officials say the callers then ask the grandparent to go buy a re-loadable money card, or wire them ranging in thousands of dollars.

Any victims of this scam are asked to contact Consumer Affairs at (831) 454-2050.
