UPDATE: Suspects identified in Harden Parkway street racing crash in Salinas
UPDATE 8/19/15: Police have identified the suspects involved in a street racing crash.
Police said Nicolas Guerrero, 19, was driving his Ford Mustang with a 17-year-old passenger. Ricardo Acuna, 19, was driving his Acura Integra with a suspended driver’s license, carrying two 17-year-old female passengers.
The two engaged in a street race traveling eastbound on Harden Parkway from North Main Street.
That’s when a 34-year-old woman driving a Ford Explorer turned onto Harden from Regency Circle, directly in front of Acuna’s car. They collided, causing the Explorer to roll and strike a tree.
The force of the impact also caused all three people in Acuna’s car to get pinned under the dashboard. All three had to be extricated from the vehicle and the 17-year-old girl in the front seat suffered life-threatening injuries.
All four people were taken to a local trauma center with major injuries.
Guerrero, the driver of the Mustang, left several hundred feet of locked wheel skid, but stopped and waited with his car. He is on felony probation and was taken to the police department for questioning, along with his passenger. He volunteered to provide a blood sample and alcohol does not appear to be a factor in his case. Guerrero was released pending the outcome of an investigation.
It is still unclear whether he and/or Acuna will be charged with crimes.
