Jose Castaneda censured by Salinas City Council

The Salinas City Council voted to censure councilman Jose Castaneda at their meeting Tuesday night. A censure is basically an official public reprimand.

Castaneda chose not to show up at the meeting but his lawyer was there to represent him. Fellow council members were quick to point out that Castaneda’s absence was proof that he should be censured. On the agenda were several big issues that could affect his district, like farm worker housing, yet he was a no-show at the meeting.

Castaneda was censured on six specific allegations including acting aggressive and disrespectful toward city employees and even making rude comments to local media. His lawyer responded by saying news reporters are public figures and should have thicker skin.

“He treated employees poorly. He just didn’t behave well with others. Yes, he did insult the media, should they have thick skin? Nobody should have to be treated like that. We expect to be treated as we treat people. So there’s no reason for that,” said Mayor Joe Gunter.

This doesn’t mean Castaneda is being kicked off the council. He will most likely be stripped of certain duties like serving on city committees.
