Marina police investigate shots fired after confrontation

The Marina Police Department is investigating an overnight shooting.

Officers were called to the 3000 block of Owen Avenue around 10:06 p.m. on Monday night, after receiving a call of shots being fired.

When police arrived on scene, they found several cars hit by rounds from a handgun.

One round also went into the wall of a nearby apartment and struck the bed where a five-year-old lay sleeping. The child was not hit or injured.

Witnesses on scene told police that it appeared a group of 10-15 teenagers had congregated in the center of Owen Avenue, south of Hillcrest and were involved in a loud and heated verbal confrontation.

When an uninvolved car proceeded slowly through the crowd, someone within the group fired approximately nine rounds from a handgun. The passing vehicle was hit, along with other nearby cars.

At this time, no one has been arrested or is in custody. The incident remains under active investigation and is possibly gang-related.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Marina Police Department at (831) 884-1210.
