Save Our Shores ranks dirtiest local beaches

The Central Coast group, Save Our Shores released a list of the top five dirtiest beaches in our area. As of August 2015, they are ranked in the following order:

1. Cowell & Main Beach (Santa Cruz, CA)
Pounds of trash removed: 5,525

2. Davenport Beach (Davenport, CA)
Pounds of trash removed: 4,700

3. Elkhorn Slough (Monterey County, CA)
Pounds of trash removed: 2,500

4. Panther Beach (Seaside, CA)
Pounds of trash removed: 1,600

5. Del Monte Beach (Monterey County, CA)
Pounds of trash removed: 525

Since the start of this year, the group says they have removed more than 18,000 pounds of trash from local beaches. Most commonly found items include cigarette butts, plastic wrappers, bottle caps, can tabs and assorted plastic/glass.
