Alisal HS students mourn loss of fellow student killed in car crash

Students at Alisal High School started the school year recalling the aftermath of a deadly crash that killed a fellow student last week. It happened early Friday morning on Highway 68. Two brothers died in the crash and their car ultimately caught on fire.

On Wednesday, the young driver’s best friend spoke with us as she had to begin her senior year without Marcelino Garcia. We caught up with this student as she was on her way to her friend’s funeral service. But as students try to cope with the loss, the school is trying to do its part to support them

The first day of classes at Alisal High School filled with nervous energy and somber undertones.

“Once I stepped in the door I’m like where’s he at, like I want to see that smile of his,” Josselyn Martinez said.

Martinez said Marcelino Garcia was her best friend. Garcia’s life cut short along with his brother Artisteo.

“He was barely getting his permithe had barely finished his class online to get his permit,” Martinez said.

The California Highway Patrol said Marcelino was the driver.

“There’s moments I’m fine and there’s moments I’m not,” Martinez said.

For Martinez and 2,600 other Alisal students, there’s extra help at school with counselors from the county and the Sunrise House.

“They’re available for the whole week and next week until we take care of each and every student that we need to take care of,” Alisal High School principal Ernesto Garcia said.

Even though a learner’s permit may be better than nothing, Martinez said having a license could have saved Garcia’s life.

“I just recommend people should just wait because it’s not a game,” Martinez said.
