New traveler 511 service for Santa Cruz County

The Regional Transportation Commission has begun a new service, CRUZ511, to keep you in-the-know about major arteries in and around Santa Cruz.

Transportation Agency for Monterey County is developing a similar 511 service for Monterey County.

Since May, with Cruz511’s new interactive real-time traffic map, you can see what traffic conditions exist Highways 1 and 17 and on other key streets and roads before you start your trip.

“Knowing what to expect can really improve people’s travel experience and cut down on frustration and anxiety,” says RTC Executive George Dondero.

Cruz511 helps you identify your travel options and travel smarter. This mobile responsive website can be accessed by smartphone, tablet or computer.

The RTC says Cruz511 is more than just a traffic map, you can also find out the safest way to lock up your bike to ensure it’s there when you return, the closest station for charging your electric vehicle and places you can meet your carpool and leave your car parked during the workday.

Also included on the Cruz511 website are the following: trip planner for bike, bus, walking and driving trips; free service to help you find carpool partners; a cost of driving calculator; and other useful tools.

Says Dondero, “Cruz511 is designed to be a traveler-friendly resource that people can use to plan how they get around.”

Cruz511 is a new community service of the Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission designed to be a one-stop shop for transportation users as well as a go-to place for information about emergencies that impact the transportation system.

Cruz511 website provides 24/7 traffic congestion information, including traffic speeds and images from over 17 traffic cameras and details on specific types of travel delays such as construction and collisions. Data from Caltrans, the CHP and Google is updated every few minutes.

Cruz511 users are reminded to access travel information before getting behind the wheel. Pulling safely to the shoulder or having a passenger consult Cruz511 are recommended for checking conditions while en route.

Initial planning work to develop Cruz511 was done with a grant from Caltrans in partnership with the Transportation Agency for Monterey County.
