UPDATE: Evidence of prescription drugs during South Salinas crash investigation, police say

UPDATE 5/26/2015 3:50 p.m.: Two drivers are in the hospital after a reckless driving incident on Blanco Road Tuesday morning, police said.

Salinas police said Pablo Pomales, 23, was driving a blue Sebring eastbound on Blanco Road just before 11 a.m. and ran a red light at South Main Street while driving about 60 miles per hour. Officers said he broadsided a 21-year-old male driver crossing the intersection at that moment.

Police said both drivers were taken to Natividad Medical Trauma Center with major injuries but are expected to survive.

Officers said they received reports of a reckless driver shortly before the crash, stating a driver in a blue Chrysler Sebring was passing other cars on the shoulder at 70 miles per hour.

Officers said there was evidence of prescription drug use in the Sebring but they don’t know if Pomales was under the influence of drugs at the time of the crash. They said a blood sample was taken from Pomales while he was unconscious in the hospital.

UPDATE 5/26/2015 11:46 a.m.: A witness said two cars were involved. Crews are wrapping up at the scene.
