UPDATE: MoCo sting operation ends in 17 arrests for alleged drug trafficking organization

UPDATE 4:59 p.m.: A sting operation ended in 17 arrests stemming from a multi-agency drug sweep in Monterey County on Tuesday morning, according to the CA Department of Justice.

Attorney General Kamala Harris said the investigation was a takedown of a major drug trafficking organization, called Operation Quiet Riot.

Investigators said the operation wraps up a six-month long investigation by the Monterey County Specialized Team Intervention Narcotics and Gangs (STING) task force. During that time, investigators said they learned the suspects traveled to Mexico to buy methamphetamine to sell in Monterey, San Benito and Santa Clara counties.

During Tuesday’s sweep, investigators said 17 guns, two pounds of methamphetamine and two pounds of marijuana were found.

STING is made up of agents from the California Department of Justice, California Highway Patrol, the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office, the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office and the Salinas Police Department.

PREVIOUS STORY: Investigators with the Department of Justice said several people were arrested during a major drug takedown in Salinas on Tuesday morning. They said this take down is part of a larger investigation involving cases in San Jose and Fresno.

Salinas police detectives said about a dozen people were detained during 13 search warrants in the Salinas area.

Investigators said all crime scenes across the city are secure.
