UPDATE: Raw sewage leak near Lover’s Point now fixed
UPDATE 5:52p.m.: The sewage leak in Pacific Grove has now been fixed. Crews say they stopped the spill just before 5:30p.m. Monday evening, but not before tens of thousands of gallons run into the ocean.
Crews will be in the area for the next several hours cleaning up but roads are expected to open soon, and people are allowed to start flushing their toilets again.
UPDATE 3:59 p.m.: Monterey County Regional Water Pollution Control said Ocean View Blvd. is still closed from Fountain to 13th Street.
Crews said the recreation trail is also closed between those streets. Pumps and public works trucks are on scene to help with clean up but sewage is still leaking, according to county officials.
Crews said they hope to have Ocean View Blvd. back open by 5 p.m. Meanwhile, they said a detour is set up.
UPDATE 2:30 p.m.: Crews said roughly 50,000 gallons of raw sewage have poured out onto residential streets and into the ocean in Pacific Grove on Monday.
Firefighters said a damaged pipeline near 15th Street and Ocean View Blvd. is leaking about 200 gallons of sewage a minute.
Crews are working to fix the leak but add the work will continue tomorrow.
UPDATE 1:00 p.m.: Pacific Grove Police Department is asking all residents and businesses to not flush their toilets until 3 p.m. Monday.
Police said a sewage leak began around 10:45 a.m. Monday morning after maintenance crews were working on a major pump station at 15th Street and Ocean View Boulevard.
Police believe a valve failed and raw sewage was pressure released from the pipeline, contaminating the area and the ocean.
Lover’s Point Beach is closed and police are asking people to stay out of the water from Lover’s Point to the nearby U.S. Coast Guard Station.
Ocean View Blvd. and the recreation trail are closed as well, police said. Officers said the mess should be cleaned up by 3 p.m.
Police are asking people to avoid the area and stay out of the water while signs are posted.
Crews said Monday’s incident is not connected to the city’s recent issues with sewage infrastructure problems.
