Memorial continues to grow following tragedies in Gilroy

For a second straight day, friends and family members of the four people killed in the crash Tuesday night have added to the memorial site along Leavesley Road.

It was too difficult for most of the students to talk on camera, and understandably so, but already this community has found ways to remember their friends in a symbolic way.

Flags flew at half-staff at Mt. Madonna Continuation High School and at Christopher High School, where Sara Williams’ name was added to the video board. She joins Natalia Salcido, the 15-year-old killed in Saturday’s crash.

“It’s not your typical high school. I feel like everyone there pretty much knows everyone,” said Jeseeca Silva, who just graduated from Christopher.

Although she didn’t know Williams well, she said Williams’ personality spoke volumes around campus.

“Sara affected a lot of people because she was always a spiritual person,” Silva said.

Silva added that the loss of four students in car crashes in less than a week has created what she calls “chaos” among her friends.

“People are like, ‘Oh, my gosh, should I even go driving anymore?’ Like it’s starting to worry everyone,” Silva said.

Mt. Madonna is holding a vigil at 7:30 p.m. Friday, and Christopher is holding its vigil at 8:30 p.m. Monday, according to the Gilroy Unified School District Superintendent.
