Law enforcement increases security at Salinas Valley Fair

The Salinas Valley Fair opened Thursday in King City. The rain didn’t stop people from enjoying the rides and tasty fair food, butthis year people noticed something different.

“They searched us when we came into the fair. And we’re carrying knives to cut our hay bales, and we’re like ‘what are they doing’?” said Loretta Sanchez.

Because of recent gang shootings in South Monterey County, law enforcement has stepped up security at the fair. This year, the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office has brought in more deputies to patrol the outer area of the fairgrounds. Meanwhile inside the fair, the gang task force and officers with the probation department are kepping an eye on who’s entering the gates.

“Gang members who are wearing colors will not be allowed in. They will be checked with a wand to make sure they’re not carrying metal objects, that sort of thing. So therearesecurity measures in place to prevent problems,” Commander Jerry Teeter said, with the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office.

To make people feel comfortable walking to their cars the city brought in outside lighting and turned on the lights at the nearby little league field.

“It is a safe facility. We have law enforcement presence there sufficient to handle the crowds that will be there,” said Teeter.

Fair officialshavealso increased private security.

Despite the recent gang shootings, for longtime fair goers like Sanchez, nothing is going to keep her away from the Salinas Valley Fair.

“This is about fun. This should not be a violent place. This is about building memories that will stick with your kids,” said Sanchez.
