Water shoots into the sky in Sand City

Cal Am crews say a total of 400,000 gallons in total was lost as water shot from a fire hydrant for an hour in Sand City Wednesday evening.

A car hit a fire hydrant just before 6:00p.m. and crews were able to shut off the water flow at about 6:40p.m., but Cal Am Water estimates about 11,000 gallons of water per minute was lost, but dropped to about 5,000 gallons per minute before crews could shut it off.

It happened near the Marshall’s.

Sand City Police were also on scene taking a report; the hydrant is believed to belong to the shopping center’s property owner.

Cal Am considers this a significant water loss but says things like this do happen occasionally, the water company does not expect customers water bills to be impacted but could not say for sure as of this post.
