King City residents fed up with spike in gang violence

With a recent spike in gang violence in King City, residents say something needs to change now more than ever. About 50 people attended the city’s regular council meetingTuesday nightlooking to city leaders for a solution.

“We’re dealing with at least third generation gang members. They all need reality checks. So do some of us,” said one King City residents during public comment.

The community is already fighting back. A group of residents started Take Back Our Town, a grassroots organization that started because of the recent violence.

“We’re a group of community members and individuals who want to see the town for the better,” said Michele Serritelli.

Mayor Robert Cullen said in order to make a change, the community needs to stand together.

“If we see crimes, we collectively need to report it,” said Cullen.

That’s the goal of Take Back Our Town -Report the problems, get everyone involved and take a stand together to create a safer King City.

“This is a great community. We do receive a lot of negative press butthis town really is amazing. We have amazing people,” said Susan Coale.

With the Salinas Valley Fairopening this week, safety is the city’s biggest concern. There will be more law enforcement and extra lighting around the fairgrounds to make sure people feel comfortable.
