Monterey native falls 300 feet to his death near Fresno

Authorities in Fresno County said Monterey native Zachary Penn, 26, fell off a cliff to his death during a camping trip last week.

Deputies with the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office said Penn was reported missing near Tollhouse Rock on Feb. 18 around 10 p.m. by several friends.

They said he walked away from the campsite and when he didn’t return they went looking for him.

Before crews arrived, the group of friends said they found Penn non-responsive at the base of a 300-foot cliff.

According to an obituary at DignityMemorial.com, Penn graduated from Monterey High School in 2006 where he played golf.

The obituary also states Penn was enjoying a day off from his work as an EMT in Fresno when he suffered major head trauma during the fall, killing him instantly.
