UPDATE: Salinas shooting Wednesday night now homicide investigation

UPDATE 2/12/15 11:31am: Salinas Police say that 37-year-old Francisco Solorio died overnight in Natividad Medical Center’s trauma care unit after being shot several times Wednesday night.

This is the city’s 6th homicide.

UPDATE 2/12/15 9:01 a.m.: Salinas police said a 37-year-old male was shot multiple times in the parking lot of 1022 Del Monte Avenue Wednesday evening. He was taken to Natividad Medical’s Trauma Center in critical condition and officers said it is unclear whether he will survive.

Police said witnesses saw two suspects approached the victim and asked about his gang affiliation. The victim allegedly announced he was a Sureo gang member. Moments later, witnesses said one of the suspects pulled out a handgun and shot the victim multiple times at close range.

Investigators said the shooter is a young, Hispanic male, short, wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans. The second suspect is about 20-years-old, about 5’10”, wearing a black ball cap, black hooded sweatshirt and black pants.

Anyone with information is asked to call police.

PREVIOUS STORY: A man was shot Wednesday night on Del Monte Avenue near N. Sanborn Road in Salinas at around 8p.m.

Police are now saying the shooting is gang related and the victim is in the hospital with life threatening injuries.

Police are interviewing witnesses and looking at surveillance video from a nearby apartment complex. At this point investigators still don’t have any suspect information.
