Update: Police identify elderly man allegedly killed by drunk driver in Santa Cruz

UPDATE 2/9/2015 2:53 p.m.: On Monday, Santa Cruz police said the victim in last week’s deadly crash was Dennis Neal, 73, of San Bruno. Neal and his wife were on vacation. Police said Santa Cruz was a place that they enjoyed many times in the past.

UPDATE: Santa Cruz police said an alleged drunk driver is accused of hitting and killing a 74-year-old man on Thursday night near West Cliff Drive and Bay Street.

During their investigation, officers said 24-year-old Robert Wright had a blood alcohol level well over double the legal limit.

Police said witnesses “should be commended” for helping the victim and his wife at the scene until crews arrived. The couple is from San Bruno and police said they were walking in the crosswalk. She was not hurt.

The witness should be commended for pulling over and ensuring that the suspect remained on scene until the first responders arrived.

UPDATE: Santa Cruz Police told News Channel 5 an elderly man was hit by a car and killed in Santa Cruz.

It happened at 7 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of Bay Street and West Cliff Drive.

Police said the victim and his wife were in the crosswalk when the man was hit. His wife was not hit. The couple was visiting Santa Cruz.

The suspect has been arrested. He’s identified as 24-year-old Robert Wright of Santa Cruz. Police arrested Wright for felony DUI and felony vehicular manslaughter. Wright was booked into Santa Cruz County Jail on $100,000 bail.

West Cliff Drive was closed between Beach St. and Bay St. for about 5 hours.
