UPDATE: Deadly crash on Highway 101 in Gilroy

UPDATE 2:53p.m.: CHP officers have not identified the driver who died Friday morning but did say the victim was a 57-year-old woman from Gilroy, she was wearing her seat belt.

Officer say the driver who initially started to swerve off the road but then over corrected which cause him to then hit the woman, is 21-year-old Jorge Arellano also from Gilroy. He was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and officers don’t believe drugs or alcohol were involved in the cause of the accident.

UPDATE 2:25 p.m.: CHP officers said one car was driving northbound on Highway 101, when for some reason it drifted off the road. The driver over corrected and crashed into another car. One driver was killed the other was taken to the hospital.

“Either collided with the other vehicle or the vehicle swerved to avoid that vehicle, both vehicles overturned,” said CHP officer Chris Misselli.

Officers don’t believe drugs or alcohol were a factor. Traffic was backed up for about three hours.

UPDATE 11:28a.m.: CHP officers are wrapping up their investigation into a deadly crash on Highway 101 in Gilroy.

They said two cars were involved with one person inside each.

One was killed and the other was taken to the hospital.

Officers said both cars rolled over multiple times during the crash.

PREVIOUS STORY: On Friday, CHP said one person is dead after an accident during the morning commute on Highway 101 in Gilroy.

Emergency crews are on-scene and traffic is backed up.

Officers said at this point two cars are involved.
