Carmel requests update from Cal-Am on city’s pipes and hydrants

Carmel-By-The-Sea is said it’s not taking any chances with future improvement projects, asking California American Water for a comprehensive report on its operations within city limits.

This comes about a year after a PG&E natural gas line explosion at 3 rd and Guadalupe streets. Last November, the California Public Utilities Commission issued a PG&E a citation for $10.85 million citing failed record keeping among other issues.

City Administrator Doug Schmitz said he wants Cal-Am to provide a report of the age and condition of its pipeline system. The city also wants to know about any future plans for improvement to its pipes and hydrants.

The letter to Cal-Am also asks for its scheduling and timing of repairs and the condition of all city fire hydrants.
