Middle school students produce videos about cold medicine abuse danger

A follow-up now to a story Newschannel 5 brought you last month, about teens at one Morgan Hill middle school overdosing on over the counter medicine. Now, some classmates want to keep this from happening to other kids. And they’ve produced a series of videos to educate kids about the dangers.

The students in the Britton Middle School video production students have been working hard for a few weeks and now they’re starting to show their educational videos to the other kids at school

“It just kind of unnerves me that people would do this,’ Dylan Row, a seventh grader said.

After several of their classmates overdosed on cold medicine last month, Row and other students in Vincent Guiterrez’s class decided to do something about it, specifically, make their own videos. They’ve interviewed a former police officer, a nurse and their principal, all to bring home the message – misusing cold medicine is dangerous.

It’s taking their normal daily announcements on a school TV station to a whole new level.

“We’ve been really professional about this and I think it’s a step up from what we normally do,” Heather Sailor, an eighth grader said.

This project didn’t just teach their kdis about video production and journalist. It was a lesson that they’re going to take with them down the road.

“The thing that shocked me is what it can do in the futuremore because it can really affect your life in the figure, not as much as what’s happening right now,” Emilia Girouard, an eighth grader said.

“It kinda shocked me that something that’s supposed to help you can make it worse,” Emma Nunes, an eighth grader said.

Armed with the knowledge to make better choices, Mr. Guiterrez hopes his students can spread their message.

“They’re like ambassadors,” Victor Guiterrez said.”When they’re in their classrooms with everybody else, they’re able to say ‘See, it’s whatI’ve been telling you’ and I hope it inspires other students to ask questions.’
