California man cancels insurance because no one will take his insurance

A recent state investigation found that 25 percent of doctors listed on the state health insurance directory weren’t actually accepting Covered California patients.

Wednesday self-employed contractor Kevin Cowley dropped out of Covered California because he couldn’t get the help he needed and was told he would get.

Crowley says, “I had to call Covered California and talk to the supervisor lady, and ask her to make me an appointment like she was my mom, and I was ten years old.”

Crowley says he had medical insurance problems ever since he signed up. Crowley said getting a doctor’s appointment to check up on a skin disorder was next to impossible.

“They would say it would be two to three months and whenever I complained about that they said go to the emergency room. Isn’t that ironic?”

Another reason Crowley says he cancelled his health insurance is because in the insurance handbook shows that if a patient is over 55 and dies, the state can ask for the money back on services it covered.

“Being 55, now it says in the handbook that they will take your house, or any assets that you may owe or possess,”says Crowley.

He spent most of his day calling various doctors, but nobody would accept his California allied health plan.

Crowley says that the doctors would say, ” They don’t get paid soon enough and when they do get paid it’s never enough.”

Wednesday Crowley cancelled his medical insurance. He said he was tired of going through all of the phone calls to actually get an appointment.

He said he knows the consequence he faces for dropping insurance.

“Yeah, I’d rather pay the fine.”

Crowley said the first day he got medical coverage it was a breath of fresh air. Now without any health insurance, he’s reflecting on that day when he first got health coverage.

Crowley says, “I thought this plan was supposed to give us the options.”
