Salinas Pop Warner team moves on to National Championship

The Salinas Cardinal Pee Wees are coming home victorious Monday as they return from a road trip to Washington State winning the regional championships.

The players who range in age from 10 to 13 years old first won the Peninsula Pop Warner region title November 15-16. That region is comprised of teams from Salinas/Monterey, Santa Cruz, Oakland and Pacifica.

The team traveled by bus to Spokane, Washington to play in the Pacific Northwest Region Championship which would give them a birth in the National Championships in Florida the first and second week of December.

The players represented Salinas in front of 3,000 players from Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada and Alaska.

Parents stressed to NewsChannel 5 Monday that the student athletes must maintain a 2.0 GPA to play on the Pop Warner team.

Now, here is how the community can support the team. The Cardinals need to raise $50,000 to get to Florida for the tournament Dec 6-13, so it doesn’t leave much time to raise the money.
