Construction worker killed by suspected DUI driver

A construction worker was killed early Thursday morning after he was hit by a suspected intoxicated driver, the California Highway Patrol said.

Officers say it happened on eastbound Highway 68 near Corral De Tierra Road in a construction zone around midnight Thursday.

Officers say the driver, Adam Zubiate of Salinas, traveled through the cone pattern, passing another car before hitting the worker.

Zubiate, 50, reportedly then continued to drive for about half a mile before coming to a stop. Officers say witnesses remained with the driver until emergency crews arrived.

The man killed was identified as 51-year-old Jesus Fernandez of Tracy. He worked for The Bay Traffic Solutions.

Zubiate was booked into Monterey County Jail on suspicion of DUI.
