Murder conviction in 2012 shooting near Alisal High

Prosecutors say Jamie Murillo has been convicted of murder for the death of a 21-year-old man in March 2013 in Salinas.

Olajuwon Milligan was shot to death just a block away from Alisal High School, minutes before school was to be let out.

Murillo engaged in a verbal confrontation with Milligan, who was sitting at the walkway behind the high school, playing his guitar and singing with his girlfriend. Milligan and his girlfriend walked away to avoid the argument, but Murillo followed them and shot Milligan four times.

Prosecutors say Murillo is a Sureno gang member.

Monterey County jurors found him guilty of first-degree murder with gun and gang enhancements. He faces up to 50 years to life in prison.

Sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 6. At that time, Murillo also will be sentenced for a separate incident in which he pleaded guilty the illegal possession of a firearm with a gang enhancement. He faces a potential prison sentence of seven years in that case.
