Plan to revitalize Santa Cruz Wharf moves forward

Plans to give the Santa Cruz Wharf a much-needed facelift moved another step forward Tuesday.

City council members approved a plan that includes adding about two acres to the structure to make room for people to walk through and ride bicycles. The plan also calls for possibly adding a new welcome center to make the wharf, which celebrates its 100th birthday this year, more inviting.

Paving and assorted repairs also are needed.

The plan has been approved but the next step is to seek funding for the project, which will cost an estimated $20 million at minimum.
