Monterey County Jail Inmate dies in apparent drug overdose

Authorities say a jail inmate in Monterey County died when a bag filled with drugs apparently burst in his stomach.

Eddie Fuentes, 34, fell ill Saturday night. He was treated, but died around 10:30 p.m.

Though a toxicology report is pending, Chief Assistant District Attorney Berkley Brannon says it appears Fuentes died of a drug overdose. He says a plastic bag was found in Fuentes’ stomach.

An investigation is now underway to determine how the drugs got into the jail.

Fuentes was booked about four months ago for alleged drug crimes.
