Swimmer swept out to sea in Pacific Grove identified as Bay Area man

A newspaper in Contra Costa County is identifying the 18-year-old who went missing at Asilomar Beach last weekend as a Moraga resident.

News 24-680 identified the man as Bryan Capdevielle, who had gone swimming with his younger brother.

Local surfers were able to get the 16-year-old to safety but when they went back for Bryan, he’d already gone under, officials said.

Capt. Greg Stump, commander of the Coast Guard sector in San Francisco, said Sunday that searchers used boats and a helicopter through the night in an attempt to retrieve Capdevielle.

The search was called off Sunday. The man was not found.

Stump says calling off such a search is one of the most difficult parts of his job.
