UPDATE: Investigation closed on arson fire at Salinas apartment complex

UPDATE 11/10/14: Salinas fire investigators told NewsChannel 5 Monday that their investigation into an arson fire at an apartment complex on Garner Ave. in Salinas is closed because there is not enough information to proceed.

Investigators believe the fire was intentionally set but it proved difficult to get any witness statements or information on the possible suspect.

Everything at scene pointed investigators to an area of origin in front of vehicle in the carport. They say no other potential ignition causes would have started the fire.

Salinas Fire does say If any information comes to light in the future, they can reopen the case.

Salinas fire said the property owner has requested permits for demolition to rebuild.

10/24/14:

A fire that severely damaged a Salinas apartment complex last weekend is now being treated as a possible arson, officials said.

Salinas fire investigators told NewsChannel 5 Friday that they are investigating Saturday’s Garner Avenue apartments as an arson case. They are working on leads to identify the suspect and Salinas police are also involved.

Fire investigators were at the scene Friday afternoon. The investigation could take two to three weeks.

Meanwhile, PG&E has restored power and gas to the building; water was restored Thursday night. New fire detectors were installed Friday, and the owners said everything is set for some residents to begin moving back in once the county Health Department gives the green light.

The fire destroyed two units upstairs. Five lower units are uninhabitable but four are ready for residents to move back in.
