Monterey Police: DNA links Seaside man to 2012 attempted sex assault

A Seaside man has been arrested in connection with an attempted sexual assault from October 2012, Monterey police said.

Brett Freshour, 23, was arrested at his home in September for assault with intent to commit rape, burglary and threats.

Freshour was identified by DNA as the suspect in an assault from October 2012. In that incident, the suspect broke into the residence and attempted to sexually assault the victim when she got out of the shower. The suspect fled on foot prior to police arrival.

A DNA profile of the suspect was located on evidence left at the crime scene. Initially, there was no match to the unknown suspect profile, and the case remained unsolved.

In the meantime, Freshour was arrested and convicted on a separate sexual offense and his DNA was added to the system. That led to a positive hit for the unsolved October 2012 case out of Monterey.

Freshour was booked into Monterey County Jail in connection with the October 2012 case with bail set at $1 million.
