2 killed in early-morning crash in Gilroy Friday; CHP suspects alcohol involved

Two people were killed early Friday morning in Gilroy after a driver flipped multiple times and landed on the shoulder of Highway 101.

According to the California Highway Patrol, 25-year-old Anthony Marta Mendoza was driving a VW Jetta south on Highway 101 near Highway 129 around 1:30 a.m. at a high rate of speed.

He went off into the shoulder, overturned multiple times and came to rest in a grassy area.

Mendoza’s two passengers were killed.

Mendoza was transported to a hospital in San Jose for treatment of his injuries. His condition was not immediately known.

CHP officers say they believe Mendoza was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.
