San Jose police arrest three in “take over” style bank robbery

San Jose police have arrested three men in connection with a string of bank robberies.

Detectives from the San Jose Police Department along with the assistance of Campbell Police Department and the FBI conducted an extensive investigation into a crew dubbed “Point Break,” in connection with a spate of crimes. Evidence pointed to a Norteno street gang based in Salinas but with members in several counties.

Search warrants were served in the cities of Watsonville, Aromas, Salinas, and Fresno.

That led to the arrests Tuesday of 32-year-old Daniel Chavez of Salinas, 22-year-old Antonio Chavez of Watsonville and 24-year-old Jesse Hernandez of Fresno.

All three men were arrested on suspicion of multiple counts of bank robbery, gun enhancements and false imprisonment for the purposes of benefiting a gang.

Sgt. Larry Day, an officer with the San Jose Police Department’s robbery unit, called the trio “the most sophisticated crew of bank robbers he has seen in quite some time.”

Detectives are continuing the investigation to identify additional suspects and determine if these suspects are responsible for other bank robberies throughout the state.
