Deputies arrest Capitola man after reported carjacking Tuesday

Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a Capitola man suspected of carjacking a 60-year-old man Tuesday afternoon.

According to deputies, the victim was seated in his Toyota Tacoma on the 3700 block of Gross Road when he was approached by a man who ordered him not to fight, and pulled him from the vehicle.

The suspect then sped off in the truck as deputies arrived on scene. The Sheriff’s Office air support unit was dispatched to help locate the stolen car and the description was broadcast to local enforcement agencies. The car was spotted by Santa Cruz Police in the 1100 block of East Cliff Drive.

Police pursued the pickup but found it abandoned a short distance later in the middle of the road.

The suspect, who deputies have identified as 29-year-old Cody Sakoman, fled on foot toward the beach but was apprehended.

Sakoman, of Capitola, was arrested on suspicion of carjacking, evading police and auto theft. He was booked in the Santa Cruz County Jail with bail set at $25,000.
